What is There to do at Wurstfest? (It’s Way More than Sausage!)

There are a TON of things to do at Wurstfest. And if you’re thinking about coming to New Braunfels for this year’s festivities, you’re bound to have an absolute blast – no matter your age.

Here are the best things to do at Wurstfest every November:

Savor German Cuisine

As you stroll through Wurstfest, you’ll find an enticing array of food options, most of which are prepared by local non-profits. With the festival’s focus on German culture, many dishes available will have a classic German flair that foodies will adore.

Sink your teeth into savory sausages. There are sausages on a stick, and there’s even a Wurstkabob from New Braunfels Smokehouse that lets you sample 5 different kinds of sausage. Indulge in a warm and crispy schnitzel (on a stick or on a plate). Try a GIGANTIC pretzel meant for ten people at the Stelzenhaus. And enjoy a Reuben from New Braunfels Performing Arts. (One of my go-to’s.)

Not into that? A crowd favorite is always the pork chop on a stick from New Braunfels Little League. Be prepared for the line, though. You might enjoy some of the traditional fair food too – funnel cakes, fried Oreos, and more.

Prost! At Wurstfest, you’ll have no shortage of beer options to quench your thirst. (And Shiner is domestic!)

But don’t stop at Shiner Oktoberfest… explore the variety of imported German beers available, which add an authentic touch.

In addition to beer, Wurstfest also caters to those who enjoy seltzers. They usually have White Claw in a selection of flavors, so you can take a break from beer while still enjoying the lively atmosphere.

Enjoy Live Music

At Wurstfest, you’ll enjoy various live music performances all day long. Alex Meixner and Die Bayrischen Hiatamadln usually draw the largest crowds, but the music doesn’t stop there.

No matter the day you come, you can explore different performances simultaneously on different stages.

There’s even an Opa band!

The live music is a BIG part of Wurstfest, and no matter your taste, there’s something for everyone.

Dance the Polka

Wurstfest features various areas where you can showcase your dancing skills. The Big Tent can get quite busy, but don’t worry – there are other spots to twirl and spin.

Wursthalle offers a spacious dance floor, perfect for polka enthusiasts seeking a fun and lively atmosphere. For those preferring a somewhat more intimate setting, head to the Little Tent. It has a small dance floor near the stage.

But as you explore the festival grounds, you’ll see plenty of people dancing – with or without an official dance floor.

Go Shopping

Stroll through the Marktplatz and Stelzenhaus areas, where you will find an array of stores featuring artisan goods, handicrafts, and more. You’ll definitely want to buy yourself a Wurstfest hat and hat pins (and a shirt for next year!).

Participate in Competitions

Test your strength and endurance by entering the Masskrugstemmen, a beer stein-holding contest where your goal is to hold a full stein with an extended arm for as long as possible. No spilling!

If that’s not your thing, you can put on your dancing shoes and join in on some traditional German dance contests. Show off your fancy footwork in the polka contest, or if you’re feeling more romantic, sweep your partner off their feet in the elegant waltz contest.

Ride the Carnival Rides

You’ll undoubtedly end up in the carnival area if you have kids. But you should check it out even if you’re just out with friends.

Hop onto the Ferris wheel and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the entire event, or get a boost of adrenaline on other rides.

Relax by the Comal River

Take the chance to unwind by the beautiful Comal River. The river runs right next to the Wurstfest grounds, so it’s the perfect spot to sit back on the hill and savor your beer.

And the bridge at the waterfall is a classic backdrop for a Wurstfest selfie.

Head to the Theater

Make sure to catch the annual Wurstfest-themed play at the Circle Arts Theater.

The Circle Arts Theater is conveniently located just outside the official Wurstfest grounds. Don’t worry about missing any festival action, though; you can leave for the play and return when it’s over.

Bring Your Kids

My kids have gone to Wurstfest every year, and they usually count down the days until it starts. One prime spot for kids is Kinderhalle, where they can attend kid-focused events such as entertaining science and magic shows. It’s an excellent place for children to explore and have a blast in a lively and engaging environment.

Be sure to hit the dance floors with your kids too! There’s nothing like sharing some fun dance moves and making lasting memories.

Of course, your kids will love the carnival too. They can hop on different rides, play games, and indulge in tasty treats. It’s guaranteed pure joy and unlimited amusement for your little adventurers.

But sometimes it’s the simple things, right? An all-time favorite activity for many youngsters is simply rolling down the hill at Wurstfest.

Make New Friends

At Wurstfest, one of the best parts is the opportunity to make new friends! With long communal tables set up for everyone to share, you’ll find yourself seated next to people from all over. This setup encourages mingling and conversation, so don’t be shy!

Strike up a chat with your tablemates as you all enjoy the delicious food and beverages. You never know who you might meet – perhaps a fellow food enthusiast, a seasoned Wurstfest-goer, or someone who came from Germany just for the fest.

Attend the Wurstfest 5K

Before heading to the grounds, you can start your Saturday morning with some fitness fun at the Wurstfest 5K! Although not an official Wurstfest event, this race is a great way to kick off your first weekend morning at the festival. It takes place at 8 a.m. and offers both a kids’ race and an adult race, so it’s the perfect activity for the whole family.

See you there. Prost!
